This project builds upon the format of the ‘Close-up’ discussion club, where discussions are held weekly and are open to participants of various interests and backgrounds. The ‘Close-up’ discussion club provides an informal public space for presenting and debating topics, ideas and projects in the field of art, culture, new media and politics.

 

The ‘4x4 Off-road Animals’ discussion series provides young professionals in the field of cinema and theatre criticism, of literature and visual arts to gain experise and experience in the management of cultural projects. Over a two month period they will be given the chance to initiate, coordinate and facilitate presentations and discussions of their choice. The Close-Up Team will be available during this period to support their effort though consultations re: event planning and choice of appropriate communication strategies. The initiative of the young professionals will be announced in advance through the club listserve ( [ elektrik _ bg ] ) and website and the club’s friends and partners will be invited to support their efforts.

 

The ‘4x4 Off-road Animals’ discussion series will change the regular schedule of discussions at the club through the introductions of ‘genre-related’ Thursdays in the period Nov. 1 – Dec 31, as follows:

every 1 stThursday of the month: cinema

every 2 nd Thursday of the month: literature

every 3 rdThursday of the month: theatre/performing arts

every 4 th Thursday of the month: visual arts

Expected results

Project Goals:

 

  • To support the development of new managerial competences among young professionals in the field of cultural studies and the Humanities;

 

  • To enlarge ‘genre- and-age-bound’ audiences;

 

  • To stimulate the debate on the role of culture in society through providing a forum where young professionals can present their achievements and informal space where the perspectives of different age groups can be brought together.

 

Project Activities:

 

  • Selection of project participants.

Timeframe: September 1 st through 20 th

Preliminary selection results:

Cinema: Yoanna Pavlova, Borimir Ilkov and team

Literature: Antonia Koleva and team

Theatre: Yana Varbanova and NBU team

Visual Arts: Dobrin Atanasov and team

 

  • Holding consultations with project participants for shortlisting themes and authors in the areas of cinema and theatre criticism, literature and visual arts. Selecting visual and textual materials to be used during presentations.

Timeframe: Sept 20 th through Oct 10 th

 

  • Project launch and promotion (drafting press release, design, print and distribution of flyers, design of project website inc. forum/blog for online comments, cocktail party

Timeframe: Oct 10 th through 30 th

 

  • Holding ‘4x4 Off-road Animal’ Discussion Series :

Timeframe: November 1 st through Dec 31 st

 

Expected quantitative results:

  • 8 presentations held by teams of young professionals in the field of cultural studies and the Humanities at the CloseUp Discussion Club
  • at least 4 teams of young professionals, who received the opportunity to gain experience in managing cultural projects
  • at least 25 % increase in the attendance of young audiences to the CloseUp Discussion Club

Expected qualitative results:

  • Improved communication among audiences traditionally closed in their ‘genre and age’ affiliations
  • Raised awareness of audiences re: the role of culture in society;
  • Developed practical skills for presenting cultural projects and sharing experiences in an informal setting.
